WHY GONGGA

2026 贡嘎山大景.png

MOUNT GONGGA

It is one of the last few spots left on this earth which are unknown to the civilized world. Its scenery is a dream, and it waits for the lover of nature, but he must pay a price.

Joseph F. Rock,

The Glories of the Minya Konka

The Gongga Range is a premier global hub for technical climbing.

Notable first ascents (FA) include

Reddomain (6,112m) by a Japanese team

Jiazi Peak (6,540m) by a British team

Gongzi Peak (6,652m) by a Swiss team

Langmanyin (6,294m) & Dadomain (6,380m) by New Zealand climbers

Starting in 1877, explorers and naturalists arrived to conduct topographical surveys and mapping.

1878

Austrian Lajos Lóczy became the first to conduct a scientific expedition of the mountain.

1879

The Béla Széchenyi expedition measured the main peak at 7,600m.

1931

Swiss geographer Eduard Imhof sketched the main peak and used triangulation to fix its height at 7,590m.

It was not until 1957 that a Chinese team successfully summited Gongga, though at the tragic cost of four lives.

From the 1960s onward, multidisciplinary surveys in geology and biology became more frequent.

In the climbing world

Gongga was the highest climbable peak on Earth around 1932

From the 1932 American first ascent of Minya Konka (Gongga)

to the 2018 summit by Chinese climbers Li Zongli and Tong Haijun

The mountain has seen both glory and loss

As of October 2018

27 people have reached the summit,

while 21 have perished

To Set Forth is Purgatory

Starting at an elevation of 1,743 meters, you will cover 21 kilometers straight up to the first pass at 4,578 meters.

This relentless 2,835-meter climb is as steep as a blade.

Endless slopes stretch ahead as this 100-kilometer journey brings you face-to-face with the towering peak- Minya Konka.

No Rest Ahead
The true test lies deeper

After descending to a 4,000-meter plateau, you immediately push for a second summit, hitting a 4,500-meter pass.

Standing on the ridge, the main peak of Mount Gongga - Minya Konka fully reveals itself, a boundless sea of snow-capped mountains.

From there, you will run 6 kilometers along a 4,000-meter ridge, straddling the line between the clouds and the wind.

Crossing the 4,500-Meter
Master's Gate

A hardcore 4-kilometer descent drops 934 meters straight to CP-No. 4 Camp.

Ahead lies a 4.2-kilometer technical section. Fully geared up with crampons and helmets, you will tackle a steep 673-meter descent to reach the crystal-clear Crescent Lake.

The Grand Finale

A 1,160-Meter Vertical Climb up Longhua Mountain. This is the final trial by fire in this 100-kilometer epic, and the ultimate test on your path to becoming a Gongga Master.

Setting out at midnight under a starry sky, the Milky Way lights your path.

Those moving at a slower pace will face themselves across two full days and nights, pushing both body and mind to their absolute limits.

A More Intense Challenge

Compared to the long grind of the 100-kilometer race, this is a much more concentrated test. With a total elevation gain of 5,129 meters and two 4,500-meter passes to cross, finishing this course is your ticket through the Master's Gate.

After overcoming the solitude of Ruoding Mountain and crossing the iron bridge over the glacial river, you will join the 100-kilometer runners, sharing the same grueling second half of the route.

Climbing straight from 1,646 meters to the first pass at 4,578 meters, you will tackle a relentless 21-kilometer stretch with 2,835 meters of elevation gain. The steep slopes will hit you wave after wave.

The Real Test Has Just Begun

The climbing isn't over, and the most brutal part is yet to come. After descending to 4,000 meters, you immediately push straight up again, battling wind, snow, and heavy breathing to reach the next 4,500-meter pass.

Minya Konka, the main peak of Mount Gongga, reveals itself through the sea of clouds, a vast, silent, snowy range. From there, you will run 6 kilometers along a 4,000-meter high-altitude ridge. Suspended between the earth and the sky, your heartbeat will be the only sound you hear.

The Final Sprint to Glory

Next is a fast, 4-kilometer technical descent, dropping 934 meters straight to CP - No. 4 Camp. When you cross the finish line at CP - No. 4 Camp, covered in snow and with your lungs burning—you will have truly transformed.

This is your moment of glory, earning your title as an Advanced Master!

The Gateway to the King of Shu Mountains

An Alpine Spectacle Above the Ancient Town

Start at Dawn on the Ancient Streets of Moxi Town.

A relentless 3-kilometer stretch hits you immediately with 1,100 meters of vertical climb, taking you past the 3,100-meter mark on Longhua Mountain. Here, a panorama of fourteen 6,000-meter peaks unfolds.

The stunning Mount Edgar stands right before you, opening a sudden, breathtaking window into the high-altitude snowscapes and revealing the true scale of the mountains.

As you climb, the scenery shifts through four distinct layers: blooming alpine meadows, dense forests, reflective mountain lakes, and the towering backdrop of Mount Gongga.

While the elevation gain is intense and concentrated, the rhythm is steady, and the route is clear. You aren't just surviving the plateau; you are constantly rising to ever-expanding horizons.

Into the Wind and Light of the Plateau

Moving forward, you will finally stand face-to-face with Minya Konka, the 7,508.9-meter main peak of Mount Gongga.

This is where your path to becoming a Master truly begins.

But this place begs, no, demands a race. Mount Gongga is the easternmost 7,000-meter mountain in the world. It stands at 7,556 meters (24,790 feet) high.

……

Totally unexpectedly, it was one of my best days of running of the year!

Bryon Powell, Going, going… Gongga! Trail racing with Kailas Fuga in Sichuan, China.iRunFar

It took seven years of careful planning and collaboration with the local government and community,

the Gongga 100 is the start of a new phase, reaching more extreme locations and creating a sustainable economic boost in these areas.

At the heart of all three courses was Gongga itself – a 7,509-metre pyramidal peak, surrounded by the wider Daxue range.

……

Gongga, a difficult and technical course on par with some of the most challenging races of a similar distance anywhere in the world, took seven years to organise. The race director and team had worked extensively with local government and the local community.

Leon McCarron, How trail running has boomed in China. GEOGRAPHICAL

The magic of FUGA Gongga 100 lies in its dramatic contrasts: trekking through old-growth forests, breathing in the scent of pine needles; crossing a bridge or rounding a ridge, only to face a skyline of 6,000-meter snow-capped peaks—all while.

……

The trickiest stretch was Longhua Mountain – the continuous steep inclines pushed my muscle endurance to the limit—no wonder the organizers call this a “King’s Trial.”
